4wd Whine

Hello, I have 98 Ranger that whines in four wheel drive. When I bought the truck the 4wd system did not work so I switched to the manual locking hubs and now it shifts into 4wd, but makes a loud whine while driving. The whine stays after I switch out of 4wd until I unlock the hubs. I have replaced the fluid in the transfer case. Maybe the bearings? Any suggestions?
 
whats the t case fluid look like?
 
The old transfer case fluid was a reddish brown color. Will check the front differential in the next few days.
 
I checked the front differential fluid level and it was full. So I decided to change the fluid and it is still has the whine any other ideas?
 
um, your transfer case front output bearing? Your front axle bearings would whine the whole time if they were bad, however, if the front diff pinion bearing is bad it would whine as well.

More than likely you have a Diff problem since the noise is still happening when the hubs are locked.

open up the front diff and check the wear and tear of the gears then I'd say that if they aren't trashed (or too tight together, there should be some slack in the teeth) then you should consider some more trouble shooting of the diff input bearing or something involving the transfer case.

if the whine is from the diff its usually carrier bearings...when the pinion bearings get whopped its usually evident at the yoke with serious leakage and or movement.

m usually its easy to remove the front drive shaft. do that and check for pinion slop....if the noise is still there with the drive shaft out and hubs locked in then you really narrowed it down to the diff.
 
It must be in the hubs. What makes up an unlockable hub in that type of axle? Last time I was interested, there was some mythical thing available from South America.

I don't think it's in the diff or case.

yeah no way the worlds toughest hubs would whine....that would be fraud:icon_rofl:
 
How do the u-joints in your front driveshaft look? Mine went out this spring and while dying, they'd squeak periodically. This eventually turned into a full-time whine anytime I had the front hubs locked (even in 2wd). Once I replaced the joints, the racket stopped.
 
You guys all realize that he already replaced them with the AVM hubs and that if he unlocked the hubs the t case and differential would infact not be spinning when driving and could not possibly cause the noise... I am goign to say either the AVM's or the Wheelbearings. Possibly the brakes too if they are worn enough.
