'86 Ranger 4x4 2.9L, have swapped in numerous FM145 and currently running a FM146. Have a loud clicking sound in all gears that only stops when I push in the clutch. I am assuming it is the input shaft and want to replace the tranny with a Mazda. Problem is I cannot find one for less than $450 in this area, and am wondering if I could swap in a 2wd tranny (fm146,mazda, or maybe even a T-5) I can find any of these for around $150, and just get a longer driveshaft so I can still use the truck as a 2wd until I can locate a decent used 4x4 tranny. Will I have anything else to swap out? (crossmember, starter, clutch pack) and have it work? I just moved from Colorado to Florida and don't really need a 4x4, but I do need a reliable truck for work (which this one has been, it otherwise runs great) Thanks!

You'll probably need a new clutch and slave cylinder (and maybe a clutch line if yours doesnt fit the new slave). Probably a new starter too.

You can run in 2wd without any problems, just remove the front driveshaft and leave it off.

Will any t-5 fit? Will I need a different crossmember and change the flywheel also(along with the input shaft bushing) I kinda figured on the starter and clutchpack but never thought about the clutch line and slave but it makes sense. Thanks!
