does anyone know what would cause a popping noise from the front end only with 4wd engaged. 4wd locks in normally but after rolling a few feet the front end feels like its binding then pops freeing it up again. the u-joints and bearings have already been replaced.

Ever replaced front or rear differential? IOW, are you sure the gear ratio of both diffs are the same? Mismatched gearing can be one cause of this.

Another thought, have you checked front diff's fluid level?

Does it repeatedly do it or just once each time you shift into 4x4?

Not good news, I'm almost 100% positive your gears (ring & pinion &/or spider gears) are chewed up in the front diff....I know this from personal experience....:shok:

Check the fluid level in the front diff., I would say it probably looks like chocolate milk..:icon_surprised: This happened to me twice until I finally figured out I needed to extend the breather line to help keep out the muddy water....:annoyed: Good Luck Man..

in 4wd its a continual binding and popping. havent checked the fluid or opened it cause i dont have the money to replace the gears if need be. everything is stock except 4.0, wiring harness and lift.

This was happening on my 90 never really paid attention to it and ended up breaking an axel. So that's my input now I have the same problem I. The rear somewhere oh well time for an 8.8
