Ok heres the deal I just bought my first 4x4 its a 91 with the 2.9L and I am in need of some help,
When I bought the truck I was under the impression that the transfer case was no good, because you could put it in gear and it would go no where, so I got under and looked and all the wires were mauled that go to the shift solenoid, so I fixed them now it rolls but sounds like shit, put it up on stands and the rear wheels are spinning and so is the driveshaft to the front but the front wheels aren't spinning, I know the hubs on this year suck(thats a fix ill do later) I just need it to disengauge the front differential... what do I do, when the truck is off and I hit 4x4 I hear the solenoid working but it does nothing, ohh also when I do drive it, it feels as if it is in low. Please help!!!

well for an immediate fix you can pull the shift motor off the t-case and actually shift it by hand. When you pull the motor off there is a stub that sticks out and gets rotated, so that could get you back into 2wd to at least be able to drive it. Also you could pull the front d-shaft and drive it like that if it isn't in low range.

I took the motor off and whether it is in 2wd or 4wd high it still drives the front? And I cant manually spin it into 4low, I can spin it far left to high and to 2wd but once i try to go up it wont spin... kinda confused cause when I pulled it off it said it was in 2wd but I well know it is not....

Sounds like something internal is messed up.

Time to pull the t-case out and see what's up with it.

yeah i guess, I tested the motor and it changes through all the gear positions just fine, but I can spin the gear selector knob on the case between 4hi and 2hi by finger and nothing happens...when I bought the truck you could not put it in gear, the tranny would just spin, once I got it home I fiddled with the shift motor and now it is stuck in 4 low......????

I really need some recommendations... I have heard that if my transfer case is putting power out at all that it should be in running condition....but it is only in low and I don't want to undo the front drive shaft.... :annoyed:

you can pick up the electric t-cases for about 50 bucks at most junk yards, might be easiest to just go grab another one and throw it in...

Yeah I guess.. My salvage yard wants $197 w/ a 30 day warranty... and $200 for a nice one on ebay...? Kinda sketch about getting a used part online though.

you could try asking in the wanted to buy forum, normally people have the electric cases lying around pretty cheap especially after theyve swapped to a manual.

Yeah, look around. They shouldn't be too hard to find. No one uses the electric cases.
