I have a 2002 ford ranger and when I try to put it into 4wd low while in neutral it doesn't do anything, but if i turn the knob then go from neutral to reverse, back up some then put it back into neutral the light will come on. To get it out of 4wd low I have to do the same thing or it just stays locked in.

I've replaced my 4x4 control unit about six months ago(when it wouldn't go into 4wd at all) so the only thing I could think of is the transfer case motor. I've read somewhere that you can clean it and that might fix it, or should I just replace it?

My first thought was the Neutral-sensing switch for your transmission shifter needs a little bit of adjustment (might be making it's connection a little above the actual detent for Neutral, and is why the t-case shifts when you move it to Reverse).
