4wd low and rear end questions

Your brake lights wouldn't work if that was the case for that switch.
And your starter motor wouldn't work if Trans Neutral switch(NSS) wasn't working.

But yes, the Ranger(and all Ford trucks) column shifter's have weak points that cause them to loosen up.

Google: Ford Ranger column shifter

The most common issue is a couple of screws that loosen up and even fall out causing shifter issues, this is an under the dash issue.

I had this '98 4WD shift control diagram, will be the same as '97:
EDIT, it won't let me post ir here because it is already posted in another thread.
Go here, post #4: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=162915

My 96 Windstar had shifter issues that turned out to be no more than a couple of loose screws, plus the two holding the shifter on...:icon_confused:

I haven't tried to start the Ranger in neutral though...

Thanks for the Diagram Ron, you are, a reasonable man.

It took me a week to figure out how in engage 4low in my 99 Xlt. for my truck i have to be in Neutral foot off brake and clutch, then 4 high engages, to put into 4low i have to have my foot on the brake and clutch and also be in 1st gear. Ive tried it every other combo i can think of and this is the only thing i can do to engage 4low, but damn the 4low does work great! i also have the 3.73LS with 31" with a 3.0. that poor little motor haha. she runs damn good though.

I took the trim panel surround to work on the radio, and of course had to unclip the 4WD knob and hmmm, the two center wire connectors were sticking out of the connector body..

I hope it's that easy...:shok:

I'll let you all know asap.

Radio AND 4WD low works!

Wish everything in life was as easy as that...
