4wd knob glue

Mine rotated like that. One tiny drop of superglue and I wiped off the excess immediately. Never a problem again.

GB :)

Having a 4406 in my explorer I feel your pain, I need to do something with mine, with the slight back angle of the shifter it has a tendency to fall off when pulling back...

I've fixed one before with a small piece of duct tape at the end of the splines, I'm waiting until I figure out a shift boot before I go crazy with fixing the knob, might bend the shifter a little as well, right now I just have the carpet split as a shift boot, works ok but could be cleaner with a boot...

On mine, I ran a thread tap down into the center hole at the top of the stick, and then bolted the ball back on with a screw (this will require use of a Dremel to make clearance under the shift-pattern insert for the screw head).

My brother's '98 had the same issue... Went to do the same for him too, but found the hole in the top of the stick was too big for a thread tap, so on that one I filled the hole up with JB Weld, drilled a (new) hole in the center of the JB while it was maybe about 90% hardened, and bolted the ball on, this time using a large sheetmetal type screw. So far so good on both fixes (both were done about 10-12 years ago).

That's funny. I was sure his was an anomaly.

The Ranger used to do that too, then I replaced the trans shifter knob, with a spare transfer case on I had around. It was a little too big, but I wrapped some electrical tape around the lever and its fine now. Summer will probably change that.
