I have a 94 Ranger with auto hubs, when I first back it up in the morning I can hear the hubs trying to lock, after a short distance I get a bang in the transfer case. Backing up some times unlocks the hub. I checked the index on the electric shift motor and its OK. Also swaped hubs left to right and the racheting noise switched to the other side. Could it be just bad hubs trying to engage or something else?

Well the hubs should be disengaging when you back up not trying to engage. And your T case shouldn't be making any noises even if the hubs keep popping in 4x4 because its a seperate unit.

Sounds like a bad hub to me, I would either get some manual hubs or... no I would go get some manual hubs.

I had the same problem about a month ago. I swapped in a set of manual hubs and have been fine ever since.

Well I went with the Warn manual hubs, and all is well. Another case of the troublesome auto-locking hubs solved. Thanks for your input.:yahoo:
