I'm typing in reference to the truck on my profile.

I got rid of the vacuum hubs and threw on some AVM 470s. I'm currently in a situation where I'm fed up with all things going on with this truck at the moment and I'm going to sell it to purchase a late model F150. I would like to get maximum funding for my new truck in return for selling my old one so I'd like everything to work. Anywho, the truck currently has 177k on the clock and has never been wheeled rough. 1st owner drove to Penn. to get to some creek or river for the purpose of using his Kayak. 2nd owner drove to and from school. I'm the 3rd and currently have gone off road quite a bit but never anything rough or deep. Here's the situation.

I engage the electronic switch and press the clutch pedal inward to switch into 4 high, says it works with the PVH tubes plugged via silicone and a large wood screw combination and the manual hubs locked in. I put it in reverse to lock the hubs in and bingo, the dashboard lighting up says I'm pretty much good to go. I then want 4 low. I do the usual, come to a complete stop press both the clutch and brake pedal and it goes into the low gear range. I pull forward at the slow speed driven by the different gear ratio. Wonderful right? I've been easily stuck 3 times now in 4-6 inches of snow in which should have been stupid easy to climb right through.

(BTW, I was curious to whether or not the transfer case is engaging and my friend got underneath her and listened. It clicked and sounded like it did it's job. The relay sounds fine as well.)

So I though I would jack the truck up to check to see if anything is spinning. It was getting dark so I half assed it with cinder blocks and put the front end in the air. My father watched and said neither front tire was spinning at 4hi or 4low. I also checked the CVs to see if they would spin with the hub's engagement. I had a problem with the passenger side prior to replacing the hub assemblies in which where it would try to spin the axle every time. It was mainly due to corrosion on the hub side of the knuckle. Anyways, I checked them again and the passenger side wouldn't spin unless the hub was engaged but the driver side wouldn't spin either way. So now I'm kind of pissed and don't really want to take it apart. I know I probably should have gone to a mechanic for him to lift it up to see the drive shaft spin if it were possible to check, but I was in a hurry. So now I'm stuck with a sort of incapable truck till I buy the new to me one.

Anyone got any ideas? :icon_confused:

i did the same swap on my 98 ranger, and when i switch it to 4wd mine take forever to lock in, and i still havent figured it out.

I'm starting to believe the AVM product isn't that well made along with a possible couple of other problems with my front end. I want to do the live axle swap from a xplorer but I'm not sure ax to what all I might need or how hard it might get. I've never done anything but small repairs.

Just because you switched to manual hubs and plugged the tubes doesnt mean you dealt with all the vacuum issues. My bro in law has an f150 with the live axles but the tcase which is electronic is still vacuum acitvated, Check all your vacuum lines and make sure none are leaking.

Well.... I'm confused. If it's running fine supposedly to the computer.... like engagement and all why would checking vacuum lines matter? I guess I'm confused as to how everything runs in my vehicle. I'm gonna get the trusted mechanic to check out everything before I swap into the live axle. I really like the live axle swap though, and no, I'm not blowing money away by doing it.

I didnt see where ou were swapping to live axle, or maybe i did and dont remember but thats a decent swap when done right. Itll eliminate vacuum hub problems and gas mileage Lol but not bad. And the vacuum lines arent that big they didnt set off any codes in his truck, but hes got other problems. I would still look around for leaks it only takes a pinhole to not have enough pressure to engage everything properly.
