4th gear question on 1987 ranger

Just shift the transmission like you normally would. Why anyone would use 4th before 55 is beyond me, and shifting in to 5th isn't going to hurt anything. Why would the gear be on the truck if you couldn't use it? If the gears are grinding, then thats when you need to worry.

in 4th, everything is locked straight through. that synchro is locked in
place, there is no pressure on any of the gears. as long as there are
no chunks floating around, you can go as far as you want.
5th is not like that.

Most people dont pull the fms apart, stupid little things in them will eventually cause them to fail. I have pulled a lot of them apart and know how they work. Yours should be fine until that syncro gives. once it cracks or shatters is when you have problems. I would just run yours. I have like 6 extra syncro rings for the fms. And to answer your question from before you have to pull the tranny and carefully pull it apart. You will need a small magnet to get the balls out and a punch and hammer to get the pins out of the forks in order to get any of it aprart. As long as you lay stuff out and dont beat on it putting it back together in will be fine. I have a few pics on my phone of one of mine tore apart. Let me know if your going to pull it apart and I will walk you through any problems you encounter.
