I have a 96 4.0 ranger that the trans was rebuilt about 30k miles ago. When I drive normal it will shift from 1st to 2nd hard but when I am on the gas hard it will shift fine. Also when I am coming to stop I can feel it down shift into first pretty hard. I checked the trans fluid which is at level. So what do yo guys think it will be? Thanks

I realize that link is for a 5R55E, but they are similar enough transmissions that some of the facts apply (I believe yours is only a 4 speed, so there is no TCC applied to "make" a second gear). Valve body gasket would be my first suspicion, but I have exactly ZERO experience with inside any automatic transmission. I have read a whole lot over there from when I had a 99 Explorer with tranny issues. Mine turned out to be a bad DTRS (had codes confirming that) so it was an easy fix.

Good luck. FWIW, I'd join over there and ask the question if SEARCH doesn't give you enough ideas. They are pretty rabid on that SEARCH being done before you ask the same question for the hundredth time.

It's not the hard shifting you have to worry about, its the soft or slipping action during shifting thats a concern, the harder a trans shifts, the longer it will last as there is less slippage during shifting, which means less heat. Change the filter and fluid, and if it still does it, take it back to where they rebuilt the trans, it should have some type of warranty, at the minimum 36K miles...
