Bought a 96 Ford Ranger extended cab 4.0 liter 4wd auto hubs(inop) . Needed a little TLC but the price was right. Has 180k on it and as far as I can tell the original tranny. Removed the valve body and did the seperator plate and blow of valve tsb. Added about 7 qts of tranny fluid so more then 50% changed? Tranny was slipping when shifting frm 2nd to 3rd. Problem got about 70% better but still slips slitghtly unless i let off of the accelerator. Suggestions? tests? Tech data? How good is the ATSG guide for troubleshooting this? Also can anyone recomend a good set of manual locking hub conversions?

did you ever solve this problem? My 96 explorer is doing the same thing. I have the VB out right now and am replacing the solenoids from another VB and also replacing the plate and servo pistons hoping for this to fix it.

It sounds like the direct clutch is slipping or losing pressure. First check the torque on the center support bolts under the valve body. Then it could be several differant things in no special order, EPC solenoid, the center support worn or cracked at the direct clutch hub sealing rings or the direct clutches or drum.

Chunk of valve body gasket stuck in 2-3 shift valve. Replace EPC solenoid.
