was wondering common problems with the 4L sohc motors, since found a ranger for 5k at a stealership that's a 01 4x4 ext cab xlt with 101k. i know about the timing chain tensioner issue?(think that's the exact part on timing)

I have one!

I have an '01. Yes timing chain rattle. I have not fixed it. But I don't drive it like I stole it. It only rattles on cold weather start up. 106K on the clock.

Fit and finish on them is not the best. One of the back doors rattles a bit. Otherwise, it seems ok.

It would be nice to see any maintenance records especially if it is an auto. I flush every 30K and mine is just fine.

fit and finish isnt the best? get off this site, these trucks are amazing. :thefinger:

the SOHC is an awesome, powerful engine. it runs my 2wd prerunner down the road balls to the wall.

they are known for a timing chain around 160,000 miles. the noise will get LOUD, and if you dont fix it, will chew apart the block. when that happens to mine, depending on its power i may motor swap. but anyways... they are great motors.

ive driven the 3.0 and i wouldnt get anything but a 4.0.

wear and tear isnt much on these if your mechanicly inclined. me, i can do a motor swap in a day, so if i blow mine im not worried.

It's a great engine I have one in my race truck and it goes through stuff a street truck will never go thru or be able to do. Like running 3 to 400 hundred miles on the rev limiter (8000 revs) almost non stop no push rod motor stock can do that
