Use just about anything that is safe for your cat and O2 sensor.

just be carefull about using, these products do work....sometimes too well.

they can dislodge large chunks of carbon which can in turn get stuck under valves. making conditions worse. so if it appears to have a rather heavy build up. Might be wiser to remove the whole upper intake...& clean that way.

cleaners

Thanks for your response. I don't know if it's needed or not The truck is 1989 4x4 xlt 2.9 with well over 100,000 miles on it sometimes it has an erractic idle hesitation etc I cleaned out the throttle intake with carb cleaner this seemed to help some. Just thinking about preventive maintence, Which product would you use?

You can detect if it's needed with a compression test. You'll get high compression if it is.

But it's not the problem, because carbon isn't erratic.

And carbon removal is a REPAIR, not maintenance. If you need it, you have a problem that caused it.

pull codes, there is a possibility that the light is burned out or that there is a stored code that may point you in the right direction even if the light isn't on. Techron is a fuel system cleaner, seafoam can be used as a fuel system cleaner or to dislodge carbon in combustion chambers but be sure to follow the directions on the bottle carefully

Fuel Cleaner

Chemtool or Marvel oil at Walmart or auto store

Is it just me or don't all the gasoline brands brag about thier so called "clean fuel"?

Yes, they do, and almost all have fuel injector cleaner in them.

That's why adding your own is kinda silly.

Despite the advertisements, carbon buildup is NOT due to dirty fuel. It is due to chronic rich mixtures or (on modified engines) poor cylinder mixing. Sludge buildup on top of valves is due to worn valve guides and perhaps bad crankcase oil.

My all time favorite is premixed antifreeze. What a country we live in. Pre-mixed is 8.00 and pure is 9.00 a gallon at Walmart. Am I missing something besides the massive profits? Are people that lazy and stupid to buy this stuff? If people keep buying it you won't be able to get pure antifreeze very long. It's getting hard to find as it is. I wish I could get a 50% raise at work to make up the difference.

Sorry for the rant, I'm so pissed at all the consumer scams going on in this country.

Yes, you're missing something.

A gallon of pure makes TWO gallons of mixed. Two gallons of premixed costs $16.
