4405 in Ranger?

I searched the internet for anything regarding this with zero results. I got a 98 4.0 auto and the previous owner swapped in a 4405 transfer case. I have no clue why it was swapped in, other then the truck has unit bearings rather then that vacuum hub bullshit. When I engage it, it seems like the truck just goes into neutral. Sometimes it seems to engage, sometimes it does nothing. I'm not sure if the gem module needs to be swapped, if something else needs to be replaced or not because I have zero experience with anything Ford. Did anyone out there do this and experienced the same situation, or anyone with any insight? Or should I just say screw it and find a 1354 and swap it back in?

BW4405
"Works like a BW1354 but also houses a transfer case clutch.
This clutch, which is controlled by the generic electronic module (GEM), enables the vehicle to be driven in 4wd on dry pavement. It also has a dealer installed Neutral (N) position mode."

So locking hubs may be moot point

These came from 1995-2001 Explorers, branded as "Control Trac"

Did "they" install the Control Trac switch?
("switch says, 4auto, 4high, 4low")

And swap GEM or have it reprogrammed?

Good read here on that transfer case: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149388

I have one that I plan to wire into my racetruck with an on/off switch to control the TC clutch. I don't know if it will work but I'll try.

The switch still says 2, 4hi and 4 lo. So I guess they didn't. Not sure if the GEM was swapped. Is there specific part numbers on each module for a 1354 and 4405 so I know which one it currently has?

GEMs are programmed for options on vehicle.
Ford dealer usually charges $90 to reprogram GEM for current options.
Calling is free and I would ask if BW4405 can be added to your VIN, they may not be able to add it.

I have read you can high jack the clutch circuit, install a manual on/off switch for it

Gem is not programmable in those years....it is ordered to spec for the truck and simply installed.

Good to know.

Do you know the years that are not programmable?
I would assume they are just "relays in a box" in those years, like the smart junction box(SJB) they started using in the mid-2000's.

So instead of going through all this mindless bull, it'd probably be just as easy to swap back to a 1354 or manually shift if by removing the encoder motor?
