Hey this is probably a little bit of old news but i just picked up a copy of 4wheeler magazine yesterday and they went on a little speel about 93-97 rangers, thought it was pretty cool, considering i'm rockin the 96. They didn't go into much depth but they think we are a runner up to a toyota pickup! i love it.

Manual transmission "marginal at best"???

Someone must still be sleeping under a rock. The FM146 went bye-bye after '92 (and was never put behind a 4.0L anyway).

i was actually wondering the same thing, the M5OD-R1 seems to me like its a wonderful tranny, i'm on my second now but that was just because i twisted the output shaft on my old one doin a burnout lol, something i could've avoided entirely i guess. The new one i have in it now is still running strong, and i've been workin it pretty hard since i got the new diffs and lower gears

All you have to do is replace the clutch and it is good, it must have been the best they could come up with to keep the Toyota in #1.

Rangers have been listed as a top deal in 4x4's in at least 2 different magazine issues over the last few years.

i did see a build in one mag that was sporting a ranger station diff cover............ill dig it up........(if my other half hadnt chunked the issue)

The only downfall to the M5OD are the rubber shift rail plugs.. they start leaking and people dont check the fluid.. Next thing you know.. BYE BYE input shaft and cluster gear. they come out with some dorman metal plugs for that problem. but it just all comes down to people being too lazy... I've taken the rubber ones out, put a layer of silicone on them and never had a problem.

IMO, Ranger's, Bronco II's, and Explorers will always be under-rated in "the mainstream".....

however, as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. All the better to get them for a sweet deal....

+1

The M5OD is an excellent manual transmission. Sure, it's not as smooth as an Audi 5 speed, but its a truck, durability is what matters. I've driven my friend's 99 Tacoma with the 5 speed and it didn't seem in any way better. Both are low maintenance transmissions in my experience; I've done clutch jobs on both.

Another thing to point out is that there is a 96 ranger in the Ultimate Adventure Challenge this year. They swapped out the TTB for a Jeep D30 and are rocking some of those new 35" BFG krawler style mud terrains.

One of the new editors of the magazine is running it, the build up was in the last issue i got.

The M5OD is not a good truck trans.....

The BW T18 is a good truck trans....but to each there own :)

Its weird.....cause last year in that same mag the Ranger made the number one.....i guess toyota paid them off this year.

later,
Dustin
