4 wheel drive not working..

Hey all, I'm new to the site and new to rangers themselves so I'll give my best shot to explain whats going on here..
In my 96 ranger, I have a turn knob 4x4, it was working fine until a few weeks ago when I went to pull out of a hill in my yard, I tried putting it in 4x4 and the lights flashed then went off. The knob still turns and everything it makes a clicking noise, then just doesn't go in at all. Now yesterday, My dad got in it to move it, he turned the knob and it kicked in. Could it be a loose wire or bad relay or what could I be looking for here? Also how easy of a fix is this, not very familar with trucks since it is my first one..

When you say turn knob do you mean push button?

I would say bad contacts on the switch, chase the wires and look for obvious things like chaffed wires and loose connections

As in turn knob I mean its on the dash. But I'll have to figure out how to check the switch tomorrow. I haven't had alot of time lately. Do I have to take apart the dash for this or should it be relatively easy?

I suspect the electronic shift motor.
search around on here and in the tech library to see how to clean and realign the shift motor.
