1988 2.0 not very far.

for the same cost, you could probly get a 2.3 block. basicly any block from 1974-1994 will work, aslong as its got a distributor hole. your using your 2.0 head right? i have a 2.3 EFI block with a 2.0 head, it works just fine, preformance is comparable to my 2.3 efi truck.

So if i were to go with a 1984 2.3L remanufactured long block engine i could bolt my intake and everything else right to it?

yep... no issue at all with trans mounting OR intake mounting...

port shape is same between the 2.0 and a pre 85 2.3, and the bell pattern is the same for all lima between 74 and 01...

I dont think the ports are the same, the exhaust are, but the intakes are different. You will need a 2.0 head ( your current one) and a 2.3 short block. I would also mill the head for a bit of extra compression. about .050" to .075". it seems like a lot but i am currently running .150" shaved off my mustang and ranger heads.

for sure, the 83-84 2.3's and the 2.0's had the same intake port shape and the 2.0 intake WILL work...
