I have a 93 ranger 2.3 and number three has a compression loss , probably a exhaust valve.( shop said 150-150-130-150)
Have found some rebuilts on line ,but would like to know other opinions of TRS folks that have gone through this.

I want to get a rebuilt with better(inconal?) than stock exhaust valves, preferably with a cheap core charge so I can take my time.( always seems to be exhaust valves on my ranger)

Any recommendations ?:icon_confused:

Thanks for any input

I have a 94. I picked up a 97 cylinder head with 24k original miles on it for $80. It included the throttle body, intake manifold, and fuel rail. I did some research in the tech library and found that the newer models had slightly larger valves, injectors, and better manifold design. Read through this: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4cylinders.html

I haven't gotten around to it yet, but when the time comes I am going to port and polish the cylinder head. The 2.3L has very restrictive design. I was also going to put a cam from Racer Walsh in it when the time comes too.

I hope this helps :icon_cheers:

Depends on what the truck means to you, but with those compression numbers why not just run it as is? Do you have a major loss of engine power right now?

That sucks.....here in WI they no longer test vehicles that are pre-1996 (pre OBD-II). The state concluded it was too expensive for the small environmental gain gotten by cleaning up the emissions of the few remaining old cars on the road. Works for me.....

They had a rolling 20 year exemption than went to 30 then went to pre 75
I could put this same motor in a 73 courier and be exempt.
Love the state just despise the people that put these nutters in charge.
Get a notice at least once a month telling me of the program if I scrap it they will give me money.
Old ranger get the same mileage as a new ranger so how about NO ya commie bastards .
So I shop for rebuild shops, found one that has rebuilt heads for $350 no core charge put old in crate and put the prepaid shippng label on it and drop at ups .
1yr unlimited mileage.

Here they look at bumping numbers ,the percentage of people effected by it and the revenue their gold shield smog stations can generate.
Screwing the people is good for the economy and the enviroment.
Then there are people like me ,Spite
Piss me off I'll get a 70 f100 and make it look like it runs on coal :icon_thumby:

The 97 head is a little different than your 93.The intake ports are a little smaller as are the valves. The bolt holes that hold the bracket for the coils are different, the coils on the 97 are bolted to the bracket that holds the alt instead of the head.
