I've got a 4 cylinder with a 5 speed tranny. I have the standard 225/70R14 tires on it now. I've got a 3.73 rear end. There's not a lot of pick up in 4th or 5th gears.

If I go to a 15" rim with a 235/75 tire will it get even slower? According to the gear ratio chart here at TRS I'm reving pretty high. I'd like to lower the rmp's and get away from the 14" rims. Will this make the truck sluggish? Anybody have an opinion on the 4 bangers with bigger tires?

thx

Lowering the engine's RPM will certainly make it more sluggish, yes. You'll probably want to RAISE the RPM (go to smaller tires, or change the rearend gear ratio also if you want bigger tires).

The 4cyl engines need some RPM to work their best. 235/75R15 tires would be best with a ratio between 4.10-4.56.

yes 235's are slightly smaller than a 30" tire. I run those(30") with my stock 4.10's, and it knocks my ratio down to 3.83's. My truck isn't to bad on acceleration, but I really wouln't go much bigger than stock size with 3.73's. If you go with 235's, find a 4.10 axle out of a junkyard and swap it in. Unless you don't mind your truck being a little slower. :D

My 2.3L has P235 tires and 4.10's in the rear, seems to work fine for me.

I had 235/75r15 with 3.73 and it was PITA, I had to downshift to 3rd to go up any kind of hill.

long story short, if u know how todo gears then just regear ur rear end, if u dont then find one thats already done, 4.10's or 4.56's are ideal for the setup ur lookin at

What's the stock gearing on a 2wd Ranger? I'm looking at doing this same wheel/tire combo on a 2wd Ranger very soon.

Cool man. I'll check that out, if I get the truck. I'm just here for research purposes right now. I'm hopefully buying a 93 Ranger 2wd 2.3L 5 speed from my grandfather this week. I talked to him today about how much he wants for it, and he said he's gonna think about it and get back to me mid-week. I think he's gonna screw me on this Ranger too. He had an 89 I was gonna buy a couple years back that he sold to some guy that a guy he works with knows. If he hoses me on this, it'll make 3 vehicles he's screwed me out of that I've wantedto buy from him. 2 trucks, and my grandmother's old Grand Marquis after she passed away.
