Can anyone help me on how to wire a 4.9 carbureted inline 6 into a ranger?

Have you measured for a fit? Cause I don't think either the 240 or 300 I-6's will fit in a Ranger engine bay...too long unless you extend the front of the bay somehow. However, a Ford 220 I-6 out of a mid-60's small car (Falcon, Mustang, etc.) might fit and maybe the slant six that Dodge put in the original Darts. As for wiring, I would get a wiring harness made for the simpler I6 motor and install that with it's own battery and then figure out how to run the Ranger electronics off the alternator and second battery. The old I-6's had like 12 wires, tops...and most of those fed just a handful of stuff (headlights, blinkers, cig. lighter, radio, heater/ac) cause there weren't many options like power windows/seats, etc.
Measure and find a six that will fit before you spend any moolah...otherwise you might be disappointed. There are several online forums for the I-6 engines...including one right here on the main forum page.

I have. It just fits, and you almost have to run a remote radiator, which has been discussed with him in a different thread.

Ok thank you that's what I was looking for I'm just a little nervouse about doing the splice because I hate wireing in the first place I'm no good at it but my friend Travis wires Hondas maybe I could recruit him to help

it fits fine. if your smart enough to move the radiator forward.

pretty much just tie the ignition box and coil powers into your trucks red, green wire comming from the firewall. which is key power and leave the rest of the ranger harness save for the eec harness in place.....

hook up the fuel pump....vroom vroom.

Dude, 4.9L and 2.8L, both 6-cyl engines. Same TFI module. Coil is close enough. Should actually be pretty plug and play.

you would run a tfi on that?

i wouldnt.

Well my ranger has the original 2.8 carbed so I'd just swap the motor in .... Idk this is why I'm nervouse lol

the major drawback of the 2.8 is the tfi setup....commonly considered an upgrade to run a duraspark setup on those as an upgrade.

your 4.9 engine should already be durasparked or some sort of mechanical distributor....

for all i know your 2.8 already has the duraspark conversion....

if it in fact does, you have no wiring to do....unless its to extend the plug for the dizzy on the 4.9.

its a cake swap.

Yeah my ranger has the original wireing I wanted to do the duraspark but I really want to upgrade lol

so its a good running 300 you have laying around on the floor?

i assume it has a trans too?

in todays world, the first thing i would go to for a gasoline engine , is a gm 5.3 swap for all around use if i wanted a power upgrade for a ranger that was cost effective and economical to run..and fairly easy to do.

second choice would be a 302 or 351 ford setup...

from there a 3.5 ecoboost or a 3.7.....

a late hemi with cylinder deactivation

maybe one of the pentastar or gm super v6 setups....

for an inline....likely a totota supra or bmw...may as well have some real power...

last thing would be a 300.:shok::shok:

I want the 300 because they have torque for days and there very strong but yeah I have the 4 speed with the grany low and the motor came from a runner driver the guy got t- boned and he sold it to me with 80,000 on it for $150 with the transmission

torque for days?

a stock carbed 300?

thats some comedy there:icon_thumby:

i think it will be better then a 2.8 for sure....but if its torque for days you want....

YouTube the turbo 4.9 there's a guy running 600 fp of tourqe and 500 hp

If you throw enough money at anything you can get just about whatever results you want. It may be possible but is far from an everyday occurrence.

Stock they are kinda sad, their only saving grace is what torque they make is down low where it is easily felt.

As far as ignition goes I would just duraspark it, instructions are in the tech library. The brain box and pigtail don't really care what they are hooked to, I ran the same brain box I pulled out of a 300 truck on both my 2.8 and 302... with a pigtail out of a 400 truck.
