Ok so the question i have is can i go to 4:56s gears in my 04 ranger with out changing the carriers? I have 3:73s in the front ( from a donor vehicle) and 4:10s in the rear. If i do change the carriers can i use the same lock right i have now in the rear? I need to get them geared the same so i can actually use my 4wd lol but i dont really want to change the carriers ( more money), i know if i go to 4:88s i definatly have to change them. And i think i will get the best mpg with 4:56s. Im turning 33s now and it does ok but struggles on hot days to stay in over drive when going up hills.

Oh also i have 8.8 axles and the rear is 28 spline

Ranger axles don't have carrier breaks, so don't worry about that part. I took 3.55 axles and put 5.13 gears in them...

Yep, no carrier breaks.

If you have a 3.0L, your mileage will be about the same with 4.56 or 4.88 and those tires, yet you'll have a lot more torque with 4.88. Might as well go with them.

Not to sound dumb but what is a carrier break? When i went to four wheel parts this guy who was dumb as a brick ( first he tried to tell me i cant drive my truck with out the front diff and a front drive shaft) i was like ok i am now and prety much told me i cant make my truck 4wd. Anyways all i have left is the gearing. i have factory shift on the fly and tied the module into the facory communications so it works just like facotry i have 2 low :-) lol. But he told me i have to have 2 new carriers for 4:56 and 4:88s then he told me i cant use my lock right anymore which made no cinse to me. And he wanted 1300 to re gear the front diff that i would carry in and re do the rear diff in the truck. Now what really pist me off is he kept playin on his computer and would not print me off a real estimate.

The lockright will fit just fine, and as stated no need to change carriers for whatever gear ratio you want to install, period.

One more question i want to check before i buy gears. The front diff came out of a 2001 ford explorer sport as far as i know its the same diff that came in the ford rangers. I know it bolts up the same and looks the same just want to check. Its a 28 spline right?

Actually i guess the spline doesnt matter since im just doing gears but the front diff is a 8.8 correct?

front diff is a standard rotation dana 35, your rear diff is an 8.8

Will i need a carrier to gear the front for 4.88s? I thought i had a 8.8 up front to, oops that i didnt buy anything yet. Ok so can i put 4.88s in a dana 35 are should i stick with 4.56, on 4 wheels parts site the lowest it brought up was 4.56 for the dana 35. Sorry to keep buggin you guys but im very thankful for the help.

get your gears and parts here, click the "Parts" button up at the top of the page, the best price on gears I've found.
