Do you think 4.56 gears are to deep for a 2.9 and 31 inch tire application?

It would be the same as running 4.10 with 28" tires, so basically a "tow package" axle ratio

Would you recommend 4.56 or 4.10. I do have 3.73. but for crawling my truck likes to stall

4.56 would be better for lower speed driving, keeps RPMs higher, so more in the torque range of the 2.9l engine.

You will be at slightly higher RPMs at highway speed even in OD, but you don't use 31" tires because you want better MPG :)

You would be at 2,400rpm at 65mph in OD with 4.56 and 31" tires
2,160 with 4.10 and 31"

4.56 will be perfect.

I ran 4.10 gears with my 89 Ranger with the 2.9L engine. It was very good off-road and all around driving. I now have a 2002 Ranger with the 4.0L engine. I installed 4.56 gears in it because I run 33" tires off-road. I also have a set of 31" tires that I use when I am not going off-road. It works OK with the 31" tires but it is not what I consider good at highway speeds. It is fine at 70 mph or slightly above but when approaching 80 I get a slight vibration that I don't like. The drive train it running the same rpm at 80 that it did at 90 with the 4.10 gears. Around town is great because it accelerates very well with the 4.56 gears and 31" tires. Fuel mileage suffers a little though.

I would say if you don't drive faster than 75 mph, the 4.56 gears will work very well with the 31" tires. The 2.9L engine like to rev to get the best power out of it. It will be much happier around town and will do better on highways with hills. If you want better fuel mileage, go with the 4.10 gears. They will still work very well with the 2.9L engine.
