i have a 1989 ranger xlt 4x4 with a 2.9 liter and soon to have a 3 inch body lift and 32s. and i know those 32s are really gunna drop my mpgs and in order to compensate for it i really want to put some new gears in it and from what ive heard 4.56s would be my best bet. but how much would it cost me? i would do install myself. but im all new to this whole regearing thing, is it possible to only regear the rear axle? seeing as when im cruising around town its typically in 2wd and i only use the 4x4 when im off the road which isnt too often.

1st, front and rear gears have to match.
2nd, if you are having them installed, i'd figure close to $2,000. that includes the gears, master installation kits, and labor. if you have a mechanic friend that can set them up for you, you'll save lots. good luck with your build.

You could probably get gears and install kits for $200-250 per axle. I payed $125 per axle at a local shop to get mine set up, but that was the friend discount and quite a deal.
