i have a 88 ranger with 31x10.5s with 3.73s and i was wondering how much easyer it would be to pull out on hills and things if i switched to 4.56 gears also would it still be easyer if i put 33s or 34s on it

4.56's with a 2.9 and 31's is awesome. Maurice has that setup in his Bronco II and it pulls like crazy.

would this put alot less strain on the clutch also where could i get just the gears and how hard would it be to put them in the front

If you don't know how, get someone to show you.

It will not put any strain on the clutch. If for some odd reason you are worried about the clutch, install a 4.0 clutch.

If anything it will be easier on the clutch

IMO 4.56s and 31s is a little over geared for the highway. It's great for around town though. My plan is/was for 32s or 33s but that won't be for a while if it all..... I think I figured it out, and 4.56s and 33s is about stock gearing.

I agree, I think 4.10s are great with 31s with a 2.9 and 4.0, 2.3s and 3.0s I think 4.56 would be better.

31's, 2.3 and 4.56 bring the truck back to stock power.had this combo in my 87.pulled a constant 20mpg no matter how I drove it.top speed will be right at 100mph, and you be at about 3 grand at 70,about 300 rpm over stock, but makes up for the weight and resitance of the larger tires.

If you go 33's you would be better off with 4.88's for daily driver, 5:13's if a play toy....poor little 2.3 just dont have much power, they are in general like a timex, they take a licking and keep on ticking. but just dont have much power...and its not so mcuh getting the tires moving, its keeping them moving.

the 91 I have now with the 4.0L also has 4.56's but its on 33's. I find it perfect over all.had 35's on it for awhile and I found it a little lazy...not bad really, but lazy. This truck pulls a avg of 17mpg even with my lead foot.Yes my tach pretty much sits at 3 grand on the freeway, but im in a truck, so I dont need to keep up with the mustangs...and Im not driving a escape so the loss of a mile or so per gallon did not bother me to have the extra over all grunt.

Maurice's '86 Bronco II with a 2.9, 31's, and 4.56's runs great on the highway. 70mp is about 2800 rpm's.

stock tires and 3.55's =31's and 3.73's = 33's and 4.10's within an mph or so.

so 4.56 and 33's would be geared lower than you are now

and would be a great towing ratio with 31's

my 4.56s will be in the truck shortly. Ill be running Mickey Thompson MTZ's I will let you know how they do with a 2.9

thanks for the feed back im going to get them eventually just dont know when got to get some $$ first lol

money? pfffffttttt.....be like every other american and just use the plastic lol....
