4.56 gears?

Ah yes. Must of mixed up the higher and lower

Lower number wise (3.27) is considered higher gear wise than say (4.10).

Low gears dont go fast but have power. High gears go fast but don't have power.

Since I'm learning all about gearing now, how does gearing affect the feel of the clutch? I learned manual on a 10-speed Eaton in a 2008 Freightliner, and I have definitely had a rough time figuring out first gear on my truck

Small gear changes will not affect it much, larger ones (say from 3.27 to 4.10) will be more dramatic. Assuming tire size and everything else stays the same, you'll find that you may not have to ride the clutch as long coming away from a dead stop, and you'll have to shift a lot sooner than you would have before.

Thanks. I think I'm struggling because the semi had so much clutch pressure and torque I could feel the engagement 100%. And I never had to rev the engine up lol. With the Ranger there is such a lack of engagement, I should wire my tach in too

Yes, the world needs to change their wording to make more sense

I think it was the COMMUNISTS that first suggested that 1st gear was a "low" gear, which of course it isn't
1st is a higher ratio gear than 2nd or 3rd in a transmission, common sense NOT communist sense tells you that

It amazing America survived the commie pinko onslaught of this gear ratio thing, I am a survivor

You can call 1st gear anything you want, it just a name not a ratio, so "yellow"
2nd is "wax"
3rd is "flower"
4th is "mustard"

see.......it doesn't change anything, only the ratio matters

Overdrive can be called "overdrive", thats fine

I put the shifter in WAX and side-stepped the clutch. The tires went up in instant smoke. I powershifted into FLOWER....
NOPE... Just doesn’t sound right.

I think 3rd should be "beans" and OD should be "pickles". Put it all together and it kinda makes sense....
Yellow
Wax
Bean
Mustard
Pickles

What about chowdah? Can that be 6th gear?

Switching to 4.56 gearing with 33" tires would put you right at the bottom of the daily driver, best overall performance scale. Almost into the most power and towing scale. It should work well for you.

My experience tells me that 4.56 gears with 31" tires is much better for power and towing. It still has decent top end speed but you have to rev it a lot to do that. I must agree though that 4.56 gears with 33" tires are a good overall balance though. Once I wear out my 31" tires, I will not be buying another set of 31" tires. Unfortunately, they are Michelin LTX M/S tires and last a very long time, especially when my 33" tires take on the rough duty.

You are correct. 31" tires and 4.56 puts right in the top of the Towing and Power band. One is definitely going to take a mpg hit with that. What kind of mpg are you getting? I'm figuring I'm going to drop from 19-20 highway to 16-17 highway.

Around town, I dropped from about 16 mpg average to about 15. I could get better than 15 but like to accelerate too much. I could get over 20 mpg with the 4.10 gears if I a kept it under 65 mph but in the range of 18 to 19 mpg at just over 70 mph. I get 17 to 18 mpg doing just over 70 mph with the 4.56 gears. So basically dropped about 1 mpg both city and highway driving. As I said before, my towing gas mileage actually improved about 1 mpg with the 4.56 gears with 31" tires.
