I am putting 4.56 gears in a 7.5 with a lockrite locker. Am I going to have to file down a ring gear tooth to be able to get the pin out to install c-clips? Any experience with gears this tall and this locker?

Yes you need to grind a tooth or two with 4.56 gears because you cannot use a notched center pin with a lockrite.

Well that was quick! Thanks! So I Imagine I grind the inside of the tooth just enough to be able to remove the pin? How much is too much?

I haven't done it yet, my gears and locker won't be going in until spring. What you do is get it all set up with the pinion and carrier installed and ready to go, cover everything as best you can to avoid metal getting into the locker itself, and you will see where the tooth needs to be ground to get the pin in. Just do it slow and just enough so the pin can slide in. You're only grinding the very outer edge of one or two teeth and only as much as needed for the pin to go in.

Having to file down the ring gear is another reason to buy a locking carrier and ditch the Lockrite. I'm not a fan of mickey mouse drivetrain parts.

I wouldn’t call it Mickey Mouse parts. My Aussie lockers work very well and seem to be well designed. Not everyone can spend the money for a selectable locker and these designs are a good solution.

I've had 4.56 gears and a lock-rite in my 7.5 for over 10 years, works great.

I may have a pic where you can see how much I had to grind off. It's not much.

The lunchbox locker isn't the issue, 4.56 gears are physically too thick in a 7.5". If you use a full carrier locker, instead of grinding a tooth on the ring gear you have to use a center pin thats been ground down. Either way something has to be sacrificed. Personally I think there's alot less "mickey mouse" by grinding the edge of a ring gear tooth because its no where near the contact point of the pinion teeth, whereas the center pin is a pretty important part.

Its a ford so it can only be so good. I have a Toyota for non Mickey mouse mods. 😂

Oh no he didn't!!

I consider the whole Toyota to be mickey mouse. If you sell it and just drive the Ford you'll be allowed to buy some men's clothing.

As long as the Toyota isn't in the era of spontaneous frame rot I think they are awesome trucks. Toyota knows how to build a damn motor that won't die. And the old trucks were pretty much indestructible. I had a 93? I got from a dealer who literally told me to just come get it away from their lot for free. No bed, sat for 10 years, frame rust was minimal cosmetic.

Toyota manages to convince their customers that they have to use Toyota oil filters- among other things. That's absolutely not true, it is illegal for a manufacturer to mandate their parts, they can mandate OEM equivalent only. Toyota owners are also more likely to get their maintenance done by the dealer than a domestic buyer. My neighbor is a case in point, he bought a new 90 F150 from us and would have it "serviced" at a tire store. I'd hear his center caps rattling when he drove by and call him to tell him he needed to tighten them before he lost them. His Tacoma is maintained by the dealer. Toyota finally "fixed" their cheesy frames in 2009. If a Ford or GM frame rusted through on a truck less than 5-6 years old there would be a nationwide uproar, Toyotas frames never made the network news. Our local Toyota dealer is reputed to be a good one, they plow their yard with a Ford F250 rather than break a Tundra.
