I changed my oil yesterday in preperation for winter, and they had mobil 1 high mileage 5 quart jugs on sale. but anyways. everywhere i look it says the motors takes 4 1/2 quarts with a standard size filter, but mine took the whole 5 with the standard motorcraft fl400s. is everybody listing the quanity without the filter or whats goin on. anybody else notice this?

Ford has this weird way of listing oil capacities. If you put in exactly what the spec sheet says to it puts the oil level smack in the middle of the "full" zone. In your case, that listed number is 4.5 quarts. So if you put in a full 5 it puts it at the top of the "full" zone.

they were 5qt when the 2.3L used the FL1A filter, they changed to a smaller filter and took out 1/2qt capacity...

well mine is right on max with 5 quarts and an fl400. ive had 2 rangers and one mazda b2300 and ive always read never to overfill em and my buddy found that out the hard way. i wanted to ask, what is the " bigger" equivelent to the fl-400s. i use to know but have forgotten cuz the people that had it before me used the bigger filter but it was a microguard and i wanted to get that piece of crap off there as soon as i could. i normally use nothing but wix on everything i own, but motorcraft aint bad.

Someone did a writeup about the 4.0 and 2.3 oil filter upgrade...I recall the number was 1773 and I think it was a Wix filter mentioned...the write up was put in the tech bulletin page but I think it actually made it to the magazine...

EDIT: Found it in the submission archives... by Plumbcrazy...

Aren't all the RBV engines 5qts...? All of mine have been, 2.3, 2.5, 2.9, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0, all take 5qts for sure.

well i did some cross refferencing last night and found that theres quite a few different ones i could use, but the filter for a 97 - 2000 4.0 will work just fine and add about 1/2 of a quart capacity, so thats what ill use next time. all are longer except for the motorcraft filter, which is the before mentioned FL1A, its just a lot fatter.ill be using the wix 1515 next time.thanks guys

The older 2.3 varied the stated capacity based on oil pan. The cast aluminum took 5.0 quarts. The stamped steel took 6.0. I have stamped, but only put in 5 when I change oil & filter. I am using the original FL1 sized filters {large can}, and I think the oil is showing about in the middle of the 'safe' range. If I add the 6th quart, it will soon disappear, so I just don't bother wasting it.
