i was driving down the road the other day and i saw a cab over smaller box truck and it said 4.5l powerstroke deisel and was curious if it would swap into my 94. has anyone ever done this swap or is it possible? if not the 94 body would it be possible in any body ranger?

You saw a 05-09 Ford LCF.

Correct. I don't know anything about the engines other than its a 6 cylinder, 4.5L turbo diesel with 200hp and 440 lb. ft of torque. Dimension wise....I don't know but if its in a over cab box truck, chances are it isn't a massive motor. However, if its physically the same motor as its 8 cylinder big brother the 6.0 powerstroke, minus two cylinders, then its a very large motor and will be hard to cram in a ranger. Though not impossible.......

I'd look for a Cummins 4bt to swap in before one of the 4.5L powerstrokes.....but if you went the 4.5L route your ranger would be one mean ass mother you know what with 200 hp and 440 lb. ft of torque.

For comparison the Cummins 4BT makes about 140-150 hp and 300 lb. ft of torque....and that I have heard is a monster of an engine in a ranger (with awesome results).

It's basically a 6.0L minus 2 cylinders... V6 twin turbo... If I were to do a diesel swap I'd look at Internationals 2.8/3.0L... Same thing that goes in the overseas Rangers, Rover's 300 TDi is based on it... Good engine, small package... Much less weight than a 4BT (which I would only see as a viable solution for a big truck - SAS, 37"+ tires)

I want to do a 4.5 swap, but it's gonna be in a FSB, not a Ranger.

I had read a small clipping about the LCF comming out with the 4.5 Disel some time ago. Back then i had thought Ford was seeing how it worked in the real world before deciding to install it in the F150. I had searched the internet for weeks looking for any info on it but it had been passed over by the whole industry. Couldn't even locate a crate engine in it.

It does shares some of the bolt on parts found on the 6.0 so i had thought it would be a perfect drivetrain for the F150 given that ford could save some money from interchangeble parts. Heck, should even be able to use the 6-speed manual tranny found in the Superduty & could deliver some great millage in a smaller truck.

Ford has their heads up there ass, just like now when they plan to discontinue the Ranger.
