OK, here I go again, still figuring out a replacement engine in the V6 forum with more options coming out of my bodily orifices than I can shake a stick at!
So now I'm picking brains again, this time on Axle ratios!
'94 4x4 8.8 in the rear and a Dana 35 in the front.
Currently running 3.73 and the rear has an LS from the factory.
I've added 3" BL and either going to 4" SL or cutting the fenders and using some fender flares.
I've had 31"x10.50"x15" on the truck and enjoyed the gear ratio however would have preferred 4.10/4.11.
I purchased some 33" TSL and put them on the truck and of course the ratio declined. I've done some number crunching and converting from the factory metric size tires on the truck which comes to about 28" and going up to 33" that gives me a new recommended ratio of between 4.28 and 4.56.
I do use the truck for some highway driving (hauling this or that, etc...) so I don't want to be tooling along at high 3000-4000 rpm on the highway. And I also don't want to be wearing out the shifter and clutch jockeying between 3-4 going over hill and dale. I found some 4.30 ratios for a mustang gt and know some of them had/have 8.8 however not up on whether the splines are the same. I also don't want to be trying to low crawl my big tail through the woods and having to do the 3-5 second rush! Good way to get your ass shot off or buried waist deep in a mud hole!!! Those of you remotely familiar with military IMT will understand that one! Hopefully those of you not, will figure it out!
I've been unable to locate, however don't mean it isn't out there. Any know where/if there is 4.30 ratio for the 8.8 and the Dana 35 in the rangers?
Oh, I did search this site, couldn't locate info, however you guys are lucky I figured out how to plug this contraption into the wall!!!

Since you have a 4wd, you have to match front and rear gear ratio's. There is no front 4.30 gear ratio for the Dana 35. If the front and rear ratio's don't match, you will bind the transfer case, causing a lot of destruction.

Your only options is either the 4.10 or the 4.56.

I was running 4.56 gears in my '97 4.0 5 speed with 35x12.50 tires and was getting right at 19 mpg on the highway and around 15 in the city. My mpg numbers are going to be different than yours because I had some engine mods done to my truck (exhaust, programmer, Screamin Demon coil pack, electric fan). I had plenty of power to do whatever I wanted as well.

Well isn't that some BS. I know all about matching axles. Someone I knew over 20 yrs ago didn't and thought he could keep up with my '74 landcruiser with 5.13 locked (front and rear) a 350 ci and 38". Don't even want to discuss what he tore up. I did however have a blast dragging his little s10 through the woods!!
Since you had the 35s and I've got the 33", you had some engine mods, I'm putting in a fresh motor 4.0. I would love to know what kind of rpm you were turning at say 70 in 5th or overdrive on the highway. I do tend to have a heavy foot.
I've also seen a lot of guys truck profiles on here with 33s and 4.56!
Sure would be nice to know rpms at what highway speeds in 4&5th gears?

If I remember correctly, I was running right around 2,500 RPM's at 70 mph (my speedo was corrected for the tires and gears as well).

A lot of people run 4.56 gears with 33's if they are going to be doing a lot of off roading. 35" tires with 4.56 gears was a perfect blend of both worlds.

4th or 5th gear?
With me not having any engine mods, another couple hundred wouldn't hurt.
I know the sweet spot (on the highway) for the 4.0 is 2250.

That was in 5th gear.

Great, computer @#&%$ed up and dumped the whole stupid page I had typed

I have 4.10 gears in mine. It's okay, but I wish I had 4.56.

Edit
4.0L & 33s, 2000RPM in 5th at 60mph

I have 4.56's and 33's. Turning 2700rpm at 60. I dont do much highway, my 4.0 averages about 18mpg.

I'll be going to 35's in the spring.

(Tires are more around 32" in diameter, pretty worn out.)
