i have an 02 with the sohc (obviously) and i have been given the opportunity to buy a 50mm turbo for super cheap. i looked under the hood and i found no place for it. i would have to have some crazy custom fab'd exhaust, and maybe intake manifolds, just to make it work. i dropped by a very respectable performance shop and talked to their turbo guy and he says that on his 06 chevy 4.8 he has the turbo on the passenger side and he built his exhaust headers to go under the motor into the turbo. i was thinking i could do the same. i would have to remove/ relocate many things like egr, battery, coolant and windshield tanks and remote tranny fluid cooler. i already have electric fans, screamin demon coil pack and their wires with autolite xp's gapped at .062, spintech 3000 muffler with one cat deleted and 2.5 exhaust from the other two back into the spintech dumped over the axle. my truck is a 4x4 but i removed the back blocks to make it level. i am about to get my hands on a locker for the back. i just need help on ideas for the fab work for the turbo, and i plan to have it intercooled and no more than 4 or 5 psi of boost. any ideas?
Thanks

On top of this turbo, you'd have to re tune the computer, and those 4.0s are not set up for a turbo and i think youd need stronger pistons/rods etc...

i know but im not going to until i find someone near me that i trust with it. many people "think" they know what they are doing, but really all they are doing is just adding fuel to the extra air. my friend fried his 5.3 like that. so im guessing stock pistons are cast?

Make sure you look at the compressor map for the turbo before you go to the effort. You are looking at a lot of work and expense to install a turbo you can get for "super cheap". If the compressor doesn't match the application, you will be disappointed in the results.
I know of someone in the Dallas area who knows his stuff on turbos. He has a 5.3 quad cab F150. The last I heard he was in the high 9s. I’ll try to look up some info on him tonight if you’d like. I need to get to work right now though.

5.3 Ford? Did he drop a chevy engine into a ford body? :icon_rofl:

all i need the turbo for is some pep on the bottom end and some extra power on the top end. i talked to a guy today in haltom city (the shop is called speedtech) and he told me as long as it will provide enough air flow it will be ok since im not planning on going big. he said with the size it is 4 or 5 psi will be plenty for the little 4.0. This guy does all their turbo work for their cars and he can call in a guy for tuning who can help me delete the rest of the cats using tuning as well as the speed and rev limiter. I am going to wastegate the turbo and limit it at 6 psi, and maybe have a blow off valve later on to increase the life of the turbo. I am going to have 2 custom set of headers fabricated by this guy and the turbo will sit low close the the alternator. i am going to get the intake manifold off the 4.0 mustang so i can get the air in thru the driver side so i will be able to have an intercooler. ARP head studs will come later in life. thats if it makes it. i am going to start scavenging parts and prices to see when i can start building!

Fyi speedteck is a pricey shop. They can and will do all the work for you at a premium. As for the exhaust A&B Muffler on pipeline in Hurst is very good. The guy can make a manifold for you if needed, and between all the people I know at least 10 vehicles I personally know of have gone to him with no problems. As for engine building go down carson to the machine shop caddy corner from speedteck. That's where they will send your engine anyways and charge you on top of their price. I've read about finding turbo's from an old ford but you would have to do some research. Cheaper shops are in the dfw area that can dyno your truck. Do some shopping and don't be another victim of speedteck's outrageous prices.

I would think twice about turboing the 4.0 sohc, they are a high compression motor to begin with. Make sure you run low boost levels with stock internals (i would run no more than 5 tops), and definitely run ic...
