So my rangers 2.9 is worn out and tired so im going to do a rebuild i want to do the 4.0l clutch swap but the figured why not do a 4.0l swap but id have to do alot of wiring and change the dash out and all that mess. My question is can i use a 4.0l long block with the 2.9l intake and fuel system???? The 2.9l set up will use a 87 tbody (bigger than a 88 tbody) and stock injector :icon_confused:

futhermore you don't have to swap out the dash... you can use the first gen dash, you just gotta wire in your gauges. get both wiring diagrams and just go for it.
i wish i would have made a wiring diagram for when i did my 4.0 w/ my stock dash

i just bought new gauges for mine and wired up the lights in the dash. didnt cost over 70$ and i took out the stock rpm gauge and put my new oil temp and volts gauge in its spot.

I have a 4.0 in my '87 with the original 1987 dashboard....

it took me three weeks to wire everything in but that's life....

And the reason a 4.0 will not accept a 2.9 intake is because the heads have bigger ports AND the block decks are 20mm taller, so the 2.9 intake is too narrow.

Everything "good" about the 2.9 is far better with the 4.0

Is there a write up for the changes for guages in an Gen I Ranger, I have an 88 that I'm doing the same thing for?

Not really the people who do it (myself included) are too busy DOING IT to take the additional step of recording it for posterity.

In my case I did "Take notes" while doing it all but I wrote it all with felt tip pen and my clipboard got rained on by a sudden thunderstorm (with tangerine sized hail) making it all unreadable, I could have rescued my clipboard but saw that first HUGE halestone and said "F that!"

I will comment that in my swap I split apart the factory 1987 harness AND a 1993 Explorer harness and merged them gotether.

ALL my splices are "hidden" behind the windshield washer reservoir

I was not only after a running 4.0 but "top mounted" relays and eliminating ALL the damned fuseable links.

I wish I would have taken notes when i did my 4.0 swap w/ my 88 dash. However, at the time I didn't know TRS existed and I thought me doing the 4.0 was something new that had never been conquered before... how wrong was I?!!! lol
