As you know I am doing a 4.0L swap into my 86 Bronco II. I have removed the 4.0L engine and am changing the front and rear shaft seals. In the Ford shop manual for re-installing the oil pan it calls for using new rear main bearing cap bolts. This seems strange. Why would new bolts be needed? Is this really necessary? Are the old ones destroyed when I remove them. If so, where can I get these bolts? I can understand all the other instructions. PS: Engine parts are all painted and ready to re-assemble.

I am sure there is someone out there that has removed the oil pan such that they would remove the rear cap bolts.

not I.

Its been three years since I took a 4.0 apart that far, don't really remember it off the told of my head.

I have done a lot of investigation on this. Here is the story: The bolts are for the main bearing cap in the rear. They are what is called TTY or torque to yield bolts. This means that they streach when torqued. The best think is to use new bolts since the used ones will be slightly longer. However, I talked to an engine shop and he said you could use them 2 or 3 times before replacing. The main issue is getting the bolts. They seem to be rare. I decided not to take any chances and found a Ford dealer that had them. He is sending me the two bolts I need. It will cost about $25 but I am not taking any chances after all the work I am putting into this swap.

I thought that might be it, but its odd to find torque to yields in the crank case, so I didn't say anything. TTYs are more commonly used as head bolts.

The guy at the engine shop said that you definity need to use new head bolts and I think he mentioned rod bolts.
