4.0L swap plug and play??

Got the engine and wiring harness out of the 91 explorer 4x4. Going to pull the engine and wiring harness out of the 89 broncoII 4x4. I remember reading somewhere that there should not be any wire splicing involved...is that true?

There will be some. Most of the plugs are the same, but the wires are in different spots and a few go to different plugs. Get a wiring diagram for both vehicles. Its not that difficult to figure out.

The only true "plug & play" I've read is between a '90 BII and a '90 ('90-'92?) 4.0L Ranger.

Explorers will have some small differences. Like said, have the full wiring schematics for each on hand and it' shouldn't be hard to figure it all out.

Probably where the engine or PCM wiring harness plugs into the vehicle harness (I'm just going by what others have reported).

I modified your thread title a bit, hopefully some of those with more experience will see it and chime in.

There's this in the Tech Library. Though it doesn't seem clear what year vehicles were involved in each & every case, so like I mentioned, you will certainly want to have diagrams on hand for it.

Im doing an 4.0 swap from 91 explorer to 90 B2. From what I have looked at so far it all looks the same but ill know for sure in the next few days.

I went from a 94 ranger to an early 90 B2. (Basically an 89) My taillights were different, had to splice the blower motor,nothin big. If you have powr windows, you might have to gt creative.

Lights, Wipers, Power Windows/Door locks, Ignition, Charging...

Just to name a few that MIGHT be different.

Really, you'll need the diagrams for both vehicles.

Like Junkie says, 90 ranger harness is plug and play... Other than splicing crap on my SOHC, I didnt splice any wire to make the harness work on my 90 B2. Dont know about the 89, Im not sure if its the same as the 90 or not, but if it is, Id look for a 90 ranger 4.0 harness before Id do any splicing, simple as pie.

I heard that the 90-92 ranger harness was plug and play essentially, i have a complete harness with sensors that was going to be used for a 4.0 to a b2 swap because it was the easiest one
