I was just wondering how hard is it to put a newer 4.0l sohc in my 1986 ranger and is it even worth it. I know the power gain is awesome but is t too much of a hassel, thanks:)

Anything is possible. If you kept all the PCM equipment with the 4.0 SOHC and changed everything to spec, it should work. Probably the biggest problem would be the oil pan. 86' Ranger had TTB or TIB. A 4.0 SOHC 01+ Ranger has IFS.

This would be the main thing for me to look for but the electrical wouldnt be a matter because i would be looking for a total loss vehicle and i could take absolutely everything out of it, thanks for the help, Brandon

The Emissions equipment, particularly integrity of the evaporative emmissions controls are gonna be a MAJOR PITA. (about on par with having a fireplug as a suppository)

You CANNOT "Defeat" the emissions controls on an EEC-5 engine, because
they are SO integrated with the engine management so as to be inseperable
(it's like getting the mustard out of Egg salad AFTER you've eaten the sandwich)

Can you make one run? Probably
can you make it run RIGHT?

If you've gotta ask....

Well i made up my mind

Well i think im going to scrap the 4.0L idea and go for a 351 windsor fuel injected. Does anyone have any tips on these engines and i was just wondering what horse and torque these things put out, thanks O and thanks for all the criticism on the four liter idea and besides not enough power!

with an EFI 5,8 engine it's more a matter of how much do you want it to put out?

As the saying goes cubic inches is almost as good as cubic dollars,
but there is no substitute for having both. :)

I would definatly build it on a later block so I could put a roller cam in it.

I am actually considering a 5.8 liter Ranger, but I was going to set mine up
strangely for a special purpose....Iw as going to buiild the engine for low
end and midrange torque and then gear the truck so can do 75-80mph
at or about 2000rpm.

the purpose? as an interstate cruiser.

Basically the engine needs to be big enough to just loaf along at 15% throttle.

a BIG engine just loafing alone "unstressed" is a time honored formula for efficiency.

You probably want it for other reasons.

dude are already done it. I'm just finishing up. it has been a pain in the ass. but not to bad, it has been pretty cool. doing something that I havn't been able to find info on. here is my page on both of my trucks. http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20504 I'm now relocating the battery to back attached to the pass. frame behind the cab.
and the reason for it the 4.0l is the emmision issues. I already had the 351 bought and ready to install. but the wonderful county on maricopa was having TIA thinking of a v8 swap. so I dropped the sohc in with all the wiring and emmision equipment from the 04. witch I renamed the 20yr ranger. due to the fact that parts on the truck range from 84(seats out of my first car, and ttb 44d out of my 84 bronco to the drive change and wiring out of the 04 ranger)
