4.0L OHV Stock Exhaust Compatibility?

I'm trying to put an exhaust back on my truck. Its a 4.0L OHV with 4x4 and a manual. Does anyone know what years and model rangers would fit onto it?
When I got it the previous owner had dropped all the exhaust components off of it after the Y pipe so its basically open headers and had all the O2 Sensors are hanging down holding on for dear life. AND IT SOUNDS LIKE A DAMN TRACTOR.

Will 2WD 4.0L OHV fit onto the 4x4?

Any insight into what I can put back onto it would be much appreciated. Trying to just grab one from the junk yard if I can.
 
If the Y pipe is intact you can probably buy everything behind that new, RockAuto and other places sell exhaust kits that have just about everything. The Y pipe is the most important part, they are not available new.

You will more than likely have to get a new catalytic converter, most junkyards won't sell those used.

Don't know if a 2wd exhaust system would fit a 4wd truck, it might.
 
Should be the same in those critters. I have a 2wd 2.9 y pipe on my 4.0 in the bronco 2.
 
But....the tail section somehow was recently smashed flat. I was looking that up and did notice some different part numbers.
 
I believe there are some differences in the flange between the Y pipe itself and the converter. Seems like it changed shape somewhere in the late 90's. Not that it really matters if you have a welder, easy to fix that, just a bigger deal if you don't and are trying to use factory parts. And the 2.9 & early 4.0 have a single O2 sensor, after 93ish they had two or more, again, easy fix to weld in a bung.
 
I'm not worried about emissions as my local gov does not require emissions for registration. I was thinking junk yard system for cheap and just putting a pipe where the old cat would have been, I'm mostly just trying to get something on the truck so those O2 sensors are actually doing something. I almost feel it might be easier to get a 90 from the parts store and just go right into a muffler out of the side and weld the bungs on but id rather it be factory-ish.

There's a 4.0 ohv at the pull a part near me (but its 2wd), wish I had something to compare it to before I went but maybe ill get lucky and it will all bolt up fine.
 
I know the 98-01 are the same. I even think they used the same Y-pipe up to 04 on the SOHC engines. My first 2003 didn't have CAT's in the Y-pipe but the 03 I have now did. My 07 is totally different and I believe that started in 04.

The 2wd would be the same is it's the same year or close.
 
Yeah ..I have the big cat flange....those are main differences. For the ohv application.
 
There is the two hole...the fat bastard style I have....and the fast burn head style . ...ohv wise.

It has been my experience that universal components are cheaper, even new stainless steel, from big names like Borla. I suspect that you could recreate the entire exhaust with universal replacements or universal hi-flow replacements, maintaining all emissions, with improved performance potential.

I will not contest that a scrapyard exhaust should cost less but replacing the catalytic converters with hi flow universals with emissions bungs included is legal and much cheaper than sourcing OEM Ford parts
 
My 2.9 Y pipe fit just fine onto the 4.0 manifolds.
 
Follow Up:

I ended up getting a pretty nice used exhausts from pull-a-part from the cats back and getting a replacement prefab cat from rock auto.
All in about 300$ probably could be done cheaper if you can fab the cat mid pipe yourself but I don't have the skills to do so.

I pulled it off a 2wd truck with the same 4.0 OHV engine and I'm 99% sure they are identical to the 4x4 everything bolted up 100% with no modifications needed.

Glad it doesn't sound like a tractor anymore.
