Hey, i am doing a 4.0l swap in a 2.9l that had a auto in it, ive done the swap before on my other truck that cam with a manual but have an issue with this one....where exactly dose the pilot bearing go??? on the end of the crank or on the flywheel??? the bearing is to big to go on the crank and the hole in the flywheel is way to big for the bearing to fit into....and i cant remember how i did it on the other truck.....

I have checked out the tech library but it was no help.....

if anyone has any insight or pics that they can help me out with that would be great cus im kinda at a stand still right now

thanks
kris

You have the wrong pilot bearing.

When I did mine I ended up with two of them (don't ask) and so I ended up (because I wasn't paying attention) with one in each.

Anyway, it goes in the flywheel.

cant say i have the wrong one.....it cam with the clutch kit and i check part numbers and the same bearing is used for the 2.9 and the 4.0

is there suppose to be a spacer that goes in the flywheel that sizes it down to fit the pilot bearing????

If so, how dose one get one??

Lol, I've got another question for everyone....why do all the Ford shop manuals from 91-present state that the pilot bearing gets pressed directly into the end of the crank shaft?!?

Clutch kits

Most new, if not all, clutch kits come with a bearing in them. I never saw one that didn't... but there may be some that do..

So there should be ahole in the end of the crankshaft. If there is a sleeve already in there it should come out...
Whatcha do is to FILL the inside of the hole, thru the hole in the bearing, with axle grease. Then you insert a PIN the same size as the hole... Then you give the PIN a whackwith your bfg! That whack tries to compress thegrease.. which cannot be done! So the sleeve comes out from the inside pressure of the pin pressing on the grease.. Got it?

Then you insert the proper sleeve for the transmission.
That's whatcha do!

The bearing dose NOT go in the end of the crank on this application(despite what the ford manual says)....it gose in the flywheel....i did get a new bearing with the kit but thats not what im in need of....i need the sleeve that gose between the bearing and the flywheel...(http://www.therangerstation.com/foru...=pilot+bearing
post #3)

i know what your going to say next....re use the old one....i dont have it cus it was an auto and was differnent.....

with that being said, if anyone has that sleeve or can go get one from there local junkyard and i will buy it off them(our junkyard dosent/wont sell me one)

Thanks
Kris

I went through this exact problem with all the ups and downs. The pilot bearing is correct and is pressed into a steel sleeve which in turn is pressed into the flywheel. You need to get the sleeve and it's only available at a junk yard.

If you put the bearing into the crank flange it would fit, but the front of the trans input shaft is not long enough to reach it because it's not designed to.:icon_cheers:

Because nobody ever updated the manual.

And yes, there is a spacer that goes in the flywheel that the bearing gets pressed into.
