Hi every one I was wondering if I could pick some of the brains out there?
Here's the thing I have a 92 ranger 4x4 with a totally worn out 4.0 it has 360xxx on it and it makes the worst sounds ever, that said this is what I want to figure out, what years of engines will work? I know that the vin code X goes all the way into the 2000 but I can't find any answers out there that state for sure that this would work. I am guessing "knowing ford well" that it is more likely that something closer in year will work but to what year?
can't wait for the help you guys rock!

Ford Ranger has the 4.0l OHV which is what you have and they switched to the 4.0l SOHC starting in 1998, but the 4.0l OHV was made until 2000.

I believe you can used any 4.0l OHV block/heads in your swap and then just bolt on your old intake/injectors and sensors.

I would also look at a rebuild, used 4.0l OHV engines can be expensive and you really don't know what you are getting.
At least price out bearings and rings

Later model 4.0l OHV had returnless fuel systems, which is why you would keep your intake and fuel rail.
