I have a 1986 Bronco II with the 2.9 fuel injected motor and it is a manual. the little 2.9 has too many issues to count and will barely run for an hour before it dies. :thefinger:

I also have a 1994 exploder with the 4.0 v6 in it. its automatic. it runs fine and can burn the tires easy. :headbang::headbang:

I still want to retain the manual transmission in the bronco.

My question is : will the flywheel/clutch bolt onto the 4.0 from the 2.9?

Also this is the first time i will attempt this swap, im am very mechanicly inclined. please add anything that i should look out for when swapping.

I have already read the little report on here. it didnt help, i need pictures :icon_thumby:

The flywheel/clutch from the 2.9 will bolt to the 4.0.

BUT

The 2.9 starter that you would need to use to get tooth engagement won't turn the 4.0. It just doesn't have the balls. A 4.0 can also slip/burn/smoke the 8 2/3" clutch.

My recommendation is to spend a few extra $$ to do this right. Grind out the inside top of the bell a bit (its less than an inch I think), then go get a 4.0 flywheel, clutch, and 4.0 manual starter and get them in there. I put the 4.0's 10" clutch on my 2.9 and I am so much happier with that over my old 8 2/3 clutch.

Also, since you probably have the FM145 trans, start saving and keep an eye out for an M5OD. You'll have a little bit of time, but that 4.0 will eventually kill your FM tranny.

Unless it is a M5OD your stock trans may be a bit weak and that smaller 2.9 clutch wouldn't last to long

Listen to adsmo8 there was some poor guy struggling a long time trying to make the 2.9 fly wheel work don't know if he ever did or not.Takes the 4.0 clutch to hold the 4.0 anyway.I switched mine from an auto a flywheel is only about seventy dollars.Anther thing I would do if you don't know the explorer well like if the gas gauge works make note of theses things easier to trouble shoot later.Another thing to do is to figure out exactly where electrically the bronco ends and the explorer begins.I used a 93 Ranger which the plug style is different and I think your explorer is too so you can't change pins in the plugs and put together.I changed the dash and steering column [like the dash better anyway] ran the donor loom next to original around the engine bay tied the lights into donor loom made an adapter plug that went to the back end.Your 86 has 2 pumps but the pink black wire runs them both.Once I figured out what to do it was'nt bad at all

well now im screwed cause i cant spend ANY money. might as well get the exploder going. all it needs is a belt tensioner and it will be good and everything but the 4x4 works.

does good burnouts though! hahaha :thefinger: too bad the bronco was way to fun untill it didnt want to start again....

oh and the fuel pump is shot and the engineer that designed that freaking fuel pump mount needs to be shot also, what the F@#$% were they thinking when they put that stupid bracket there to support the fuel pump! they could have bolted it to the frame! :temper: :annoyed:

rant over...
