So I'm trying to plan some upgrades to the motor before it goes into the truck. Just wanted to try and get some opinions.

Headers - Hedman any good? I've seen the JBA, but a little pricey. Is it worth doing the headers?

Exhaust - I've seen Gibson, Flowmaster and Dynomax. The gibson looks nice. Worth the 350-400 bucks or is it better to spend 250 on a flowmaster?

Chip - Is the JET chip worth it?

Throttle body and Spacer - Worthwhile?

Wires - Accel and JBA or MSD, either one better than the other?

I think that's about it. If you can think of anything else, go right ahead and let me know. Thanks

Jesse

the jet chip is definitely worth it. my dad put one on his 96 bronco. before he could get 9mpg no matter how he drove it. with the chip if he baby'd it he could get 14. it also added like 60 horsepower.

With a camshaft and gear swap headers can be a good investment

Any of them will definately give ya more NOISE, but without internal engine modification very little in other results.

NEVER under ANY circumstances will anything GOOD occur form such a swap!

Wires - Accel and JBA or MSD, either one better than the other?
As long as the stock wires are working no OTHER wire can do better! All the wires do is conduct electricity, if they are doing that then no wire can do it better!

If you relly want to get your ride on the track then start on the INSIDE of the engine. Most of the parts you ask about will STILL work after modding the inside and actually making more horses.

Gibsonnnnnn:D ..... i like mine so much i feel a compulsory need to comment on every thread i see gibson mentioned in:D

Thanks guys.

Anybody have experience with the chip?

Also, I figured the throttle body spacer was junk, but what about the over sized throttle body? Or is that just stupid too?

An oversized throttle body will not net any gains either, unless you change how much air the engine is sucking in behind the throttle body. (In other words, you've changed things internally to allow more air at a given RPM)

I don't have any experience with the chip, but if you gain less than 20 HP at 5500 RPM, there is no way it is worth it.

Adding an aftermarket exhaust will help the engine breath better.......but only at an RPM that you will be unable to use.

If you want a better noise from the exhaust, buy a chambered muffler (Flowmaster 40) and install it in place of your stock muffler. The 'Thrush Fully Welded muffler' sold at Summit Racing.com is the EXACT same thing as a Flowmaster 40, and it costs $30.

i have jbas on my ranger but what year you putting them on people say that on a sohc they actually loose power

Hey big jim, I want to know what you have on your truck. I always see you putting down after market products. Their out their for a reason. If a product wouldnt put down number than no one would buy that product which means that particular engine would have little after market space. Trust me i know. I almost got part ownership of dr. performance and i see this happen all the time in the diesel world.

HA!

Mine has bout 130,000 miles on it and it is BONE STOCK! Still has factory plugs and wires.. Runs just like it did the first time I sat in it.

As for all the aftermarket crap.... I've been doing this too long and know too much to allow myself to be suckered in by fake ads and heresay.

Hey! It's all about the money when it comes to pie-in-the-sky boltons anybody can give a few of their products to magazines and TV shows and sell out next week. NO PUBLISHER DARES to say anything BAD about products! They all DEPEND on products to make their living...

Ford knew what they were doing when they put this engine in our rides. I betcha there ain't a handfull of guys that, in their backyard, under their tree, can find a way to get even 5 more horses at the rpm we USE. For damn sure I'm not one of them.

Among the things I do know however would be, our air cleaners flow far more air than our engines can injest! AND they don't depend on OIL to trap the fine particles that do damage to the engine.
Carb spacers might even slow the vehicle down..but couldn't do anything good for the engine.
Changing the exhaust system WILL make more noise. But no power.
Intake matching, exhaust matching and port/polish might show some results if we keep the rpm at or above five grand... but at the rpm we use mostly...no gain there either.
Lectric fans and underdrive pulleys and other junk like that.. If guys just want to spend money and fool around under their hoods...well hell why not? But they shouldn't expect any gains that would justify the expense or the risk.
If I wanted more power I'd stuff a small block in there with bout maybe 400 cu in in it.. It would have some interesting parts in it and would pull stumps if I asked it too.
If one really wants more horses he simply must pull the engine and do some really trick internal work on it. If he can't afford doing that kind of work then he should save up for it and not fall for the silly commercials.
You asked and I answered.

The best mod you can possibly get is ported polished heads from supersix motorsports. Nothing else is worth a damn if the engine cant breath.

Since you are mr. know-it-all, is it just the 4l that cant make power with after market parts or is it most engines. I have a 2008 f-250 diesel 4x4 with an afe intake, spartan tuning :yahoo: , and 5 inch dp back exhaust. dyno'ed her out at 573 hp and 1232 ft/lbs of torque with just 2 grand of bolt ons. Yes two very different concepts but on my diesel i followed the basic principles of more air, better, more efficient tuning, and a more free flowing exhaust that resulted in double the engine out put the truck had stock. Y doesnt this work on a 4l???

Bone stock, 1st gear, pedal to the floor, my truck would NOT hit 5k RPM. After installing, a cold air style intake, 2.5" exhaust and Hi-flow cat's I can pull 5200 into 3rd gear, and the truck is noticebly peppier even though any mileage gains have been negated by weight and tire/lift.

Now, in addition to the little things like those I would do a cam swap (comp 422) and the head work as well as bumping the compression up. 95tm heads on your 90's 4.0L would be right around 10:1, and along with everything else would make for a fariy peppy 4.0L.

Not even NEAR the same

First thing to speak about would be the $2,000. you spoke of.. Nobody has been takling about spending that amount of money!
Then you compare such different engines that shouldn't even be on the same page. I'm betting that if you ONLY put a tuning chip in there you would have been as happy with that ride as you are after doing the other modifications..
