I'm hopeing to start this tomorrow. I have a 91' Explorer (approx. 13k miles on motor), and a 94' Ca 4.0 Ranger (approx. 390k miles on origonal motor). Both are 4.0L, R1 trans. Both motors run well, but the Ranger is getting tired, and its my daily driver.

Questions:

Will I have any problems going form the Cal. motor to the rest of the country motor?

Probems with the difference in years?

Computers?

And can I pull the motors with the trans attached (both are 4wd)?

Thanks in advance...

I just swapped a 92 Explorer into a 94 Ranger. You have to swap the injectors from the 94 as they are different. 91 Black top vs.. 94 Red top injectors. Your 94 CA probably has EGR so you'll probably have to swap exhaust manifolds and other associated stuff from the EGR. I'm not sure what all is included here since mine was non EGR. You have to use the Ranger Engine Wire harness as they different between the Ranger/Explorer but easy to exchange as all the sensors are the same. As a further note the oil pan gasket is different starting in 94, so just remember this if you have to change it (get one for the oil pan motor year).

I've read that is possible to pull with trans attached, but I'd think it would be difficult. It is a PIA to get the bolts on the sides of the bell housing out (long extensions with wobbles) and had to use a end wrench to get the top 4 out.

ON EDIT: Use the 94 Ranger computer, Harness and Injectors in the Ranger. Will work with the 91 engine. The computers/Harness is different between Explorer/Ranger.

Thank you very much. Any more advice would be appreciated too. I think I'm going to try to pull them with the transmissions, because I just rebuilt the trans in the Expolrer as well (forgot to include that), unless its highly advised against (I really dont want to have to do 2 transmissions, and 2 motors in one weekend). Thanks again.

Couple of other quick tips. Removing the fan/clutch (recommended even without transmission) is difficult without the proper tool. Search on it's removal here, (both had right hand treads which is different from what I read). Fought it for hours until I ended up buying the wrench from NAPA for $75 which suxs for something I'll probably never use again.
Buy the tool for the quick connect fuel lines ($18 at NAPA). Much easier than disconnecting from fuel rail. It can also be used on AC lines, but you can get motor out without removing AC lines, there is enough flex points to move compressor out of way. And last not sure what transmission you have but if Auto don't forget to take bracket for transmission lines off on passenger side of motor (mangled mine).

You can also rent the fan clutch tool from Autozone for like 20 dollars. And good suggestion on the threads. My fan shroud says "Right Hand Thread" on it. So me thinking that it was reverse thread (why would they mention the threads if it were normal, LOL), fought it for a while and then decided to go the normal way....and bada bing. I'm probably retarded, but I've always known threads as reverse or normal, not left or right.
