Hey guys I have another question about 4.0's
I have a 90 2wd 4.0/a4ld with a bad engine.
I have access to an explorer built 4/91 4.0/a4ld 4wd.
The question is, will this engine swap with my truck or am I going to have to change all the wiring and ecm. I am looking to do this on the kinda cheap.
Thanks guys.

should work. get the sploder rear axle too.

The motor itself wont be an issue. You may have to change the engine harness. The connector (beside the alternator) was round VS square on some models.

No biggie though, it's all plug and play.

When I swapped a 93 explorer 4.0 into my 94 ranger 4.0 I had to swap the engine harness too. It was not alot of work. The wiring on the explorer was all backwards and the main connectors to the firewall were on the oposite side of the motor. My explorer motor has a cam position sensor that is still in there but not plugged in anymore since the original harness didn't have the proper connection. Also, the explorer motor has a EGR valve on it which I left on the motor. It too is not hooked up. I kept the headers from the explorer on the motor and needed the EGR assembly to keep the return tube closed off. Eventually I will be making up a plate to close off the return tube coming off the driver side header and eliminating the EGR setup all together. No need for it since the ranger doesnt recognize it anyway. I also noticed that the explorer throttle body doesnt open as far as the original ranger one so i swapped the orignal TB onto the explorer motor and it runs like a champ. If you have any more questions just let me know. good luck

91 to 90'? Just swap the blocks out. Use your accesories. Done.

i swapped a 98 explorer 4.0 into a 1995 ranger that was a 4.0. the problem was the camshaft position sensor. 95s was shorter and had 2 wires, 98 was longer and had 3. i jsut put the 95s into the 98, but now every now and then my oil pressure goes to zero. other than that all i did was swap the wiring harness from the 95 onto the 98 and dropped it in.

the 95-98 explorer 4.0L is a different beast. its overhead cam and the engine he is talking about is a pushrod engine.

Were'nt they all pushrod engines in that era?

To my knowledge, the overhead cam version didn't come out until mid '98.

My '97 Exploder is still a pushrod engine..........

I thought all the OBD2 explorers got the OHC or the V8........ learned something new.
