hopeing to do a 4.0 swap on my 97 ranger.

will a 93 sploder 4.0 work with a 95 ranger 4.0 wiring harness.
also will a 95 4.0 wiring harness be a plug and play swap like it was for my 90 ranger?

someone stop me if i am wrong but no, your truck is an obdII which started in 1996, if you really want to make it work you could by retrofitting the entire wiring but you would also need to use the older gauge cluster....tons of work because for all intents and purposes you would need to turn a 1997 truck into a pre-1996 truck. and if your 1997 does not already have a 4.0 the transmission will not bolt up, you will need an obdii 4.0/harness/computer/transmission

Up to and including 94 was OBD I, anything 95 and newer is OBD II, and No, the wiring harnesses will not interchange up to 94 and 95 later...Any 2.8, 2.9, and 4.0L (both OHV and SOHC) trans will bolt up, however, if you have an auto, you will need the appropriate year trans as the ECU controls a variety of functions depending on the year...The manual tranny's are easlily adaptable no matter the year...

i know about the trans the donor has a 5speed. what i am wondering about is can i put the 95 wiring harness on the 93 engine? because the 95 donor has a tired engine that smokes, and the 93 has a good engine.

You will need to swap over the intakes as the OBD I has the aluminum intake and the OBD II has the plastic, not sure if the lower intakes are compatible, but a quick search on intake gaskets will tell you that, but besides the intakes yes the long blocks can be interchanged...Be aware of the first generation 4.0L heads are proned to warping/cracking...

as far as v6's go the 1997 never came with a 2.8, or a 2.9, so like i said if you don't already have a 4.0, the bellhousing will not match

The 2.8L ended production in 1985, the 2.9L's production ran from 1986-1990, the 4.0L OHV production was 1991-1999 ( 1996-1999 Ranger only), and the 4.0L SOHC ran from 2000 to current production. I never said the 2.8L and 2.9L was produced all those years, but what I did say is all these engines share the same bolt pattern, so any trans from any of these engines will bolt up to a 4.0L. Yes the bellhousing is different but they still share the same bolt pattern. There are differences in strength from trans to trans, but depending on the OP's budget and source of transmissions he now knows what to look for and what will and won't fit:icon_thumby:

A 4.0 is a 4.0 until you get to the SOHC motors. Just swap the long block and transfer all the senosrs and electronics to the older motor. You will need to swap the intake manifolds and possibly the exhaust depending on how your EGT system is set up.
