Ok, so I'm putting a 4.0 out of a 12/90 explrr into my latest addition 4/90 ranger that was 2.9. So Ive heard about flywheel shims etc. and will the dust shield from between the eng/trans work? the 2.9 or 4.0 shield? I know the wiring should be plug and play. However, the ex was a auto will that comp be ok with the manual. And yes I believe I ve read all the articles in the tech section. Thanks Guys.

Not a ranger and not as new but on my '86 BII (when I swapped to the 4.0 M5OD) I had to use the 4.0 dust plate. Go ahead and upgrade your clutch to the 4.0 as the 2.9 clutch will slip sooner. Don't forget to get a new slave, pilot bearing, and throwout bearing to save trouble later on.

Flywheel shims? I never had to shim anything. I used the starter from the 4.0 and got a new 4.0 flywheel. Don't remember shimming anything but maybe someone else can offer more advice.

already have new 4.0 everything, and Ive got both dust shields, which to use tho, 4.0 auto or 2.9 auto shield

i'd say the 4.0.. just see which one lines up. they both should, unless the starter hole is different
