did a swap in my 87 ranger, put in a 4.0 out of a 93 explorer. need part numbers or info on what to look up. i have an 87 ranger. 4wheel drive. no a/c, no ABS. cant find info anywhere. PLEASE HELP!

Knowing why it failed would be very helpful.

Does California do just a safety inspection on vehicles, like the older models… vs the emission stuff ?

I'm pretty sure California does full on Nazi emissions testing on everything.

Yep!! And he did not say why it failed so nobody here can help him until he finds out more info and tells us. Best to take it to a shop and find out why. It might be something simple.

it appears they nailed his ass on a technicality. the state of Komifornia wants a numbers match of components on their "approved" list, or sumthin like that.

Glad I live in a non-emissions test area of Ohio, for now.

Sorry for the late response, I failed on no check engine light hooked up, not a problem that's an easy fix. I mainly failed because of emissions setup and computer that I'm running. My truck is a manual 5spd, manual 4x4, no ABS. And I'm running an explorer ecu that was out of an automatic with abs and all that. And nowhere I can find the correct part number for the correct computer i need

I suggest moving. Might be easier.

You can register it at my Dad's house, for a small fee. :) lol

The automatic computer runs the engine differently than a manual trans computer. Find one for a 5spd 4.0 of similar year.

Should have asked them, if they know it is the wrong one they should surely know what the right one was they were looking for. :icon_twisted:

I know Nebraska loves to bust people who register their vehicles out of state to avoid their horrendous tag fees, Komifonia would probably nail you to the wall for such an offense.

My experience with Drive Clean technicians is they usually do not know specifics and they give you a bunch of general information (on emissions stuff). If there are questions about the build or rebuild involving compatible parts et al you probably need to clear that with the officiating body because they should know specifics.

However, as 85_4x4=16 mentioned...the right computer will help things immensely...and does anyone know if the 87 dash even had a cel? My 88 never once showed such an animal and was originally EFI with a 2.9.

Did the motor come from a private deal or a junkyard? If they have the motor they should have the computer or one similar...

If you take the dash panel off you may see it is there, if you pull the cluster you will see there is probably no bulb in it.

I don't know if my cluster is original but I have a CEL that has never done a thing. I am pretty sure my '86 2.9 parts truck did too but it didn't have a bulb in it. I don't know if all the engines required it for awhile or maybe mine has a later cluster in it. I have thought about getting a low oil pressure sender and try make it work with that.

SEE2 ecu should work for you its for a 94 ranger with mt
Just head to your local pick n pull find a 93 to 97 ranger with a manual trans and pull the comp out need a 10mm and a 8mm socket there above the engine a little left of center

Or go to elpablos smog shop give them a couple of dollars and have them sniffer test it and go with passed smog the cali smog places dont actually pull anything off the computer passed with my ranger there twice with a mass evap leak by clearing the codes before they pulled it on the dyno
