my friends got a 96 Ranger, 4.0, automatic. when he starts it, it runs and idles fine but when it sits for about 5 minutes in drive or reverse it will start to run rough and stall, then when he starts it back up it idles really high.

any suggestions, its even got my automotive teacher :icon_confused:.

It possibility could be the brake booster. When sitting in gear you have to hold the brakes. The booster may have a vacuum leak that is causing it to stall when brakes applied.

Not a guaranteed test, but think you could try to trouble shoot this by applying the park brake while in gear so you can release the pedal brake and see if she'll continue to run after your five minutes.
