I'm gonna probably attempt my 2000 3.0 to 4.0 SOHC swap this weekend unless something comes up with the swap or my fiance goes into labor lol. I just had a few last minute questions:

1) The new motor is from a 2002 Explorer, I don't have the original steering column but I do have the new key for the new motor. Can I take my original key, and get a new one cut to copy it but have the chip programmed from the new key?
2) Also, with the new wiring harness, do I have to swap everything under the hood and inside the firewall or just under the hood?
3) Are the motor mounts the same?

Motor mounts would be different. If your current key has a PATS chip in it, I'm pretty sure you can program it to the new PCM. I'm not sure about the wiring harness, I'd assume just underneath the hood. Keep us updated on the swap, we like pictures here. :icon_thumby:

Here is what you do about your keys. Go get a hardware store key made from the key to your Ranger. A cheapo non-PATS key.

Tape the Explorer to the bottom of the column near the ignition. Try to start it with the hardware store key.

That may work, it may not. If it doesn't you will need to get it towed to a dealer to get the keys programmed.

auto or manual trans? If its a manual you'll need an M5OD-R1HD. If it is an auto you can swap bellhousings but Ford used the 5R44E behind 3.0L engines which I can fore see a SOHC tearing up in no time. May want to use a 5R55E. If the 2002 explorer has a 5R55W transmission (has no dipstick) then the computer will not control the 4/5R55E. If the explorer has a 5R55W 2wd trans, I would use that as the gear ratios are MUCH better than our "E".

I have the original trans with the motor. There's a little metal piping that comes off the top, I assume that's for the dipstick. My truck is 2wd.

It's in the middle? Has a crimped cap on it?

That's a vent, not a dipstick. The 2002 Explorer had no trans dipstick. It has a standpipe in the pan that is level with the fluid level when the fluid temp is ~80*, engine running at idle.

If the Explorer is 4wd, I'd get a 4x4 rear shaft and leave it ride. It will be a lot less work and you will have a low range for things that low range is useful for.

I think it's from a 2wd. I just put a 8.8 from a explorer in my truck.

Looking online it looks like a 5R55E. The trans says 2001 on it also but I was told it came out of a 2002. If it was an earlier model it could have had the 2001 setup still.

I don't think you could get a straight up '02 4wd Explorer 4dr, it was either AWD or 4wd auto... so it would kick into 4wd every time it moved. I would rather find a regular case (preferably manual) and use it.

My truck is only 2wd, why need a transfer case? Do the motor mounts mount in the same location?

Low Range and if you want to use the transmission out of the donar provided it is 4wd.
