alright guys new to the site and new to fords. i was recently a dodge owner. but my question was i have an explorer 92 4wd with lift and 33's, and the 4.0.
is there anything about these motors i know the heads and top end was re done at 120xxx miles its got 170xxx on it now what can i do to keep this thing runnin at a peak any advice tips or anything. I do all the routine like oil and stuff just wanna get the most outta this rig thanks for the input

As long as you don't let it over heat, given reasonable maintenance it could run forever. Theyre a good motor.

They have issues with cracked heads if you let them overheat. so keep a eye on the coolent and as the above said don't over heat them.

If it doesn't have a second rad about half the size of the first one infront of the main rad. have one added. this pretty much solves the problem.

After that old age.

Don't they develop a lifter tap after a while?

Yes, sort of. The tap is from the pushrod/rocker arm interface and is irritating but harmless. Some guys have replaced them but I've not yet bothered.

I am quoting myself on this since I wrote it in the morning and I really shouldn't do that.

The second rad Isn't for the engine its for the transmission if you have a automatic. But it still helps since the auto transmission dumps large amounts of heat in to the same rad as the engine uses. putting in the second transmission rad helps with the heat.

These motors are Cologne engines (german engineered) I've heard of these things going 500,000 miles if properly maintianed. They are basically a bored and stroked, beefer version of the 2.9 and were designed to run on the european rally circut, the North American production version is tuned down alot, therefore even more reliable.
