About 2 weeks ago my mother told me her 93 ranger was running rough. I went and looked at it. spark plugs were dirty so i cleaned them and told her to get new ones. hooked up the code scanner and it would not read her truck, later that day hooked it up to another ford and it worked.
Does that mean the computer is bad? she just paid a shop $500+ to replace oxygen sensors and 1 other sensor. they also told her the computer was bad and no longer made. This shop also has a bad rep. Thanks for any help

It is possible for the computer to be bad and the truck still run. But my question is...if they knew the computer was bad why did they replace the sensors. I think she got screwed in that deal. I would take it back have them take off the parts they installed off and put the old ones back on because that obviously doesn't sound like that was her problem. As for the computer they can order one for it and it isn't new it should be refurbished. These new mechanics are not reading the manuals provided to them anymore. If they know how to work a Fluke Meter they would have know the perameters for the sensor voltage's at the computer

wow, im here at work (Carquest) and figured i would see if i was able to get you a part number. There are 15 differnet computers for a 93 4.0. some of them are on a critical core plan. This means that more than likely it isn't avalable. What you can do is have yours sent in for repair. You are giving yours as a core so they can rebuild it. Most of the time its like $70-$100 to look at it and then the cost of the parts it takes to fix it. I know Carquest can do this. Not an ideal situation if thats what it comes down to, but it can be done. If you can take the old one into the parts store, they should be able to pull the numbers off and give you more information about the cost.

i just got home from looking at the truck. tried to start it this morning and nothing, computer wouldnt let the scanner get codes so i pulled it and got the numbers off it.then looked for one at 2 junk yards couldnt find one. went back put the old computer back in, truck started right up then i scaned it agian and got codes 157, 998
