How much offroad potential does a 1997 ranger 4X4 sport package have? What are some good starter things i can do (ie. lifts, tires...) Im new to this

depends on what you put into it. a lift and tires are pretty much mandatory for good 4 wheeling

Yea i figured....Im getting 31's for free from my cousin, and a 2'' lift for christmas. SO that is where i will start.

probably seems a bit elementary but i dont even know....really new to this stuff

find the number under "axle code" on the sticker thats in your door jam on the driver side. in the tech library there is a section called NUMBERS, under that is AXLE CODES. compare the number you found on the sticker to the number and axles they list and that will tell you the gear ratio your rear axle is running. and if your starting with the 4.0 thats a pretty good start for a power plant. add a 2" body lift and those 31's and you'd be surprised the places you could go
